SEX IN AMERICA
From Puritans to Cybersex
A History of Sex in America 1600-2000

Research and development for our first major permanent exhibition is underway. Exhibition designers, multimedia and digital media integration developers are now being selected to bring the fascinating story of sex in America to life. This inaugural exhibition will present a comprehensive history of American sex and sexuality through artifacts, art, photography movies, texts and interactive installations. Sex in America will form the core of the Museum of Sex's program of exhibitions. We expect that this engaging informal history of American sexual beliefs and behavior will offer great insight into a sometimes baffling subject. New research on sex in America will help us to shed some light on the myths about Puritans, Victorians and "liberated" moderns. From the sexual rites of passage of American native peoples to the life-size recreation of this country's longest standing brothel in Dumas, Montana, a secret side of this nation will be exposed. Additionally, the exhibit will present the evolution of sexual life in the U.S., from a family-centered reproductive system in the colonial era to the trend toward romantic marriage in the nineteenth-century to sexuality in the industrial, commercial, and information-technological age and beyond.
To complement Sex in America, three other exhibits will be presented:
LAWFUL SEX
The Evolution of Obscenity Law and Sexual Freedom in the US 1700-2000

Lawful Sex, the Museum's first internet based exhibit, will trace the evolution of obscenity law and sexual freedom in the United States from the 1700s to the present. An interactive exhibit with varying degrees of depth and detail, the site will be of interest to both scholars and laypersons alike. Lawful Sex will catalogue, document and summarize every case in all jurisdictions pertaining to sexual freedoms and obscenity law. In addition, watershed events and interesting characters will be explored further in order to provide the visitor with a contextual historical background. Throughout this politically neutral exhibit, all sides of the obscenity debate will be recognized, with links provided to related organizations and individuals.
CAGEY CITY
A History Of Sex In New York City

This exhibit will dramatize the mysterious, sensual and sublime worlds of New York City, revealing the rich sexual traditions of the infamous metropolis. As the title implies, the "cagey" nature of New Yorkers, from the erudite to the avant garde will show through in installations on New York City from the 18th century to the Roaring Twenties, the theater, including burlesque and the Rockettes, the arts, the East and West Villages, media and advertising, Harlem and the Tenderloin, New York's sex underworld, with an overview of sexual mores and practices, the immigrant experience, sexual diversity, censorship, the world of fashion, personalities and scandals and on the controversial 42nd St/Times Square area. Cagey City will portray New York City's extraordinary urban landscape--the zoo-like lay of the city itself, which has produced a unique sexual identity for its inhabitants and visitors.
FUTURE SEX

The Museum of Sex will explore the future of sex by imagining intimate life in the year 2100. This multimedia exhibition will predict human sexual behaviors, with installations on altered states of sexual performance, varieties of sexual lifestyle, including marriage, new reproductive technologies, sex in outer space and on the cultural, legal and religious values toward sex in the new millennium. A peek at sex at the height of the information-technology age, Future Sex will present new sex technology and biotechnology for recreation and procreation and will describe the potential for sex in cyberspace and through virtual reality in the world of tomorrow.
